College Night Scholarship 2019

Congratulations to the 2019 College Night Scholarship recipient, Andy Garcia!

Congratulations to Andy Garcia, a senior at Granite Hills High School of Porterville Unified School District, for being selected as the 2019 College Night Scholarship Award Recipient!

This is the 13th Annual Tulare County College Night Scholarship that has been awarded.  Though many students across Tulare County apply, only one is chosen to receive this scholarship based on their academic and career preparation.  Once a student receives this scholarship, they are eligible to renew it each year for $1000 for four years.

Andy has been accepted to University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) to pursue his degree in Biology, a first step towards his career goal of becoming a Surgical Oncologist.  He will be the first in his family to attend a University and he credits College Night with providing him the opportunity to learn about his post-secondary choices and other critical information like how to complete applications and financial aid available. He is a very motivated young man and had many honors, activities, and community services listed on his application.  Among those that stood out to the committee, was his effort to found “Grizzlies Fight Cancer” a club at his high school for students and staff who, like him, have had a family member or loved one battle cancer.  Though the club, he has inspired those on his campus to donate time and resources to support his community cancer treatment center.  Andy was also chosen to be a 2019 Coca Cola Scholar, a very distinguished national award given to only 150 seniors each year in the United States.  Last year, Andy was recognized on the TCOE & KSEE 24 news segment “Your Character Matters” for his leadership in organizing a prom at his school for Special Needs students.  Needless to say, he blew the committee away with his commitment, determination, and generous heart.  We truly believe he is deserving of this award and will make the most of this scholarship as he works towards achieving his goal of helping others beat cancer!

We are excited to have selected Andy and wish him all the best!
